Software Used: Allen-Bradley RSLogix programming software with SLC500, PLC5 or ControlLogix hardware
Course Description: This course is designed for municipal employees whose job function includes working with PLCs and programming software. Students will get hands-on experience working with the hardware and software on industrial quality training units. This course will give the student a complete basic understanding of the way a PLC works, how the PLC is programmed and how the PLC interacts with a variety of discrete input and output devices.
Prerequisites: The student should have experience with the Microsoft Windows operating system and experience with personal computers.
Course Objectives:
  • Identify electrical control components including a variety of input and output hardware and discrete devices
  • Identify the different parts of a PLC and specific PLC modules
  • Discuss how PLCs interact with various input and output components
  • Specify PLC hardware for specific applications
  • Demonstrate the ability to set up communication between PLCs and field devices
  • Demonstrate an understanding of electrical symbols and terminology
  • Demonstrate the ability to write and troublshoot a simple ladder logic program
  • Demonstrate an ability to navigate through a complex ladder logic program
  • Demonstrate an understanding of common PLC software instructions
